Do exactly what the guy above says.  The 2 screws that he says to remove to remove the tail light assembly are the small ones on the top and bottom.

Your solution sounds simple, now explain how to get the bulb out of the socket. We have a 2003 silverado and the bulb seems impossible to remove from the socket without destroying it. There appears to be 4 tabs holding it in place an no apparent way to easily remove the actual bulb.
