My wife's nissan altima needed a camshaft sensor when it did this.  It started out every once in a while it would jerk, but eventually got worse we even think it started using more gas per mileage. Once the camshaft sensor was replaced we haven't had any more problems and the gas per mileage returned to normal.

I don't know if this is your problem or not but may be something you might want to check.

I have been maintaining a fleet of approximately 55 light, medium and heavy vehicles for over 20 years. Most are 4X4 pickups and off road fire fighting trucks. Some medium duty trucks. Some military light trucks. I can answer most questions concerning 4X4 engine, drive line, suspension, electrical, and fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Ford, GM, and Dodge, old and new, but prefferably not newer than 99.
