Chevrolet Repair/motor dies

Question
My 2001 Chevy Tahoe idles low when I let off the gas and sometimes dies after I let off the gas and slow at a stoplight or to turn in.  The RPMs drop to 400 or so and it dies about a third of the time.  I just replaced the fuel filter to see if that was the problem, well, it wasn't.  Now I am thinking that it is the fuel pump, but that is $265 and a day out of my weekend to replace.  Got any ideas or a test that I could run?

Answer
Hello Filus,
Sorry for the time, but I haven't been able to log on for a couple days.
Yes, there is a fuel pressure tester, and a test port.
Some parts houses will loan it, or test it for you.
Your problem could also be the idle air control valve.

I have been maintaining a fleet of approximately 55 light, medium and heavy vehicles for over 20 years. Most are 4X4 pickups and off road fire fighting trucks. Some medium duty trucks. Some military light trucks. I can answer most questions concerning 4X4 engine, drive line, suspension, electrical, and fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Ford, GM, and Dodge, old and new, but prefferably not newer than 99.
