Question
howdy van
i've got a 1995 Z71 started out thinking it was the transmission jumping out of gear. had to put in 4 high to gey it home. jumped the gun and went and purchased a used tranny but talking to other folks. they think it possibly could be the transfer case. in that case where might get a good break down of the transfer case. i have a haynes manual.doesn't quiet have what i'm looking for i'm more or less commited to rebuilding it now. any information i could get would be deeply appreciated. thanks joe

Answer
Hello Joe,
Undoubtedly, the public library, refference section, is the best place to look through all the manuals you can immagine. Hastings has a good rack of manuals, also, and a place where you can sit and browse.
A Mitchel Transmission manual would be a great place to start.

But here is another thought.
Put it in 2 wheel Hi, or Low, and the transmission in gear, and look at the rear driveshaft to see if it is turning. If it is, and the wheels are not turning, you could have a broken axle, or some other problem in the rear end, and no transmission or transfer case problems at all.

I have been maintaining a fleet of approximately 55 light, medium and heavy vehicles for over 20 years. Most are 4X4 pickups and off road fire fighting trucks. Some medium duty trucks. Some military light trucks. I can answer most questions concerning 4X4 engine, drive line, suspension, electrical, and fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Ford, GM, and Dodge, old and new, but prefferably not newer than 99.
