About Mari Expertise I can answer on mostly everything except questions on Breeding or Pregnancy. Please do not ask me questions on those topics. I do not believe in people breeding their dogs unless they are experienced in the area and in it to better the breed. There is nothing more heartbreaking than a Chihuahua dying at the hands of an unexperienced breeder who was not prepared and bred their beloved pet because it was so cute to have puppies or for their kids to experience the "miracle of life". Please leave this up to the experts. Enough said...
Experience I have been around chihuahuas since I was 15 years old. I have experienced many situations with this dog breed from housebreaking, introducing new dogs, common ailments, skin problems, feeding, etc. Again do not ask me questions on breeding because you will not like what I have to say. I am all about educating responsible owners about this breed not aiding in the decline of the dogs.

Question Hello. We have a 9 week old Chi. Yesterday, my husband gave him his next set of shots. That was at about 4:30pm. By 6pm he was broken out in hives, his eyes swelling shut, staggering and shaking his head. We took him to the Vet. She said he had an allergic reaction to possibly the shot. She gave him a shot of somthing as well as benedryl. He seems to be fine when he's 'resting'. this morning he woke up, all bright eyed and bushytailed. Went out to potty, ate, etc. After he'd been up about an hour, he started breaking out again, and swelling. Husband gave him more benedryl. He's resting and it's getting better now. My question is: how long should this go on? If it was the shot, would him getting up and moving around cause the break outs again? HELP!
Answer It should be over soon, unfortunately because these guys are so little sometimes a reaction can last longer than what we would condiser normal. If he does break out again in hives I would call the vet, repeated hives could mean something else is causing his reaction. For future reference, since now you know he gets reactions. Make sure he never gets more than one shot on a given day, and PRIOR to administering a shot give him the benadryl 20-30 min before the vaccine is administered.
Make sure he drinks plenty of water to flush out his system, give him some nutrical while your'e at it (a high calorie supplement) sometimes they're bodies go through a shock after an allergic reaction and we want to prevent any other mishaps.
I hope the baby feels better soon. I have a 2 year old that gets such bad hives/swelling, and a fever that the last time he almost went into shock, but we learned the benadryl prior to the shot works like a charm.
