Question
Hi, We are in the begining of twelfth week. My wife is experiencing nausee and vomiting which started during the 6th week and still continues. She vomits 1-2 times every day regularly. Is is okay or a serious concern?. Because of nausee she avoids most of the foodstuffs. Even if she eats well one or two times a day that goes off in vomiting. Does this affect the pregnancy?
I am not when this stop. Being a vegan, her protein intake is relativly low approximately 10-15 gms a day. She was taking milk before now stopped that also.

Answer
Gerard,

This sounds like typical morning sickness.  She can try some other remedies that may help, like motion sickness bands on her wrists, which may help.  Also, keeping a little food in her stomach rather than trying large meals should also help.  She should try to eat what sounds good to her and she feels like she can keep down, and try to take a daily vitamin, if possible.  At this stage the baby will still get its nutrients from her body.

Remember to have her stay hydrated.  The nausea should start to taper off soon, but some women do experience nausea/vomiting throughout their entire pregnancies.  If the vomiting increases or she begins to seem dehydrated or loses more than 10 pounds, then talk to your care provider.

There are some medications that can be prescribed if the vomiting becomes too severe.

Best,
Catherine
