Question
Hi,
I am 16 weeks pregnent.I had my ultrasound today. The sonographist mentioned that she is not able to recongnise sex of the baby. But she said it can be a girl as she can see one line..is it so ..So, do u think that this can be the possibilty that i am having a girl.
thanks a lot in advance

Answer
Shipra,

I'd say there's a 50% chance it's a girl;-)

Seriously, though, 16 weeks is much too early to expect a reliable gender estimate.  The best time to check gender is between 20-24 weeks.  Anything less than 19 weeks is a shaky "guess"timate at best.

The gender organs don't start differentiating until around 12 weeks and at 16 weeks, there's just too much room for error.  Those parts are pretty tiny still at that age.

If you want to know the sex for certain, then you'd need another ultrasound during that time frame for the best estimate.

Best,
Catherine
