Childbirth/Bleeding 6 weeks after childbirth

Question
I had a baby 6 weeks ago and am currently breastfeeding.  I went to my 6 week checkup 2 days ago and my dr acted slightly concerned that I was still just barely bleeding (usually just off and on).  Today I started bleeding very heavily (moreso than a usual period for me).  I have heard that you are not supposed to have your period if you are breastfeeding.  Will it be OK to wait to contact my Dr after the weekend?

Answer
Sarah,

Some women never miss a period, even when breastfeeding.  I'm not sure why your doctor was concerned about lighting bleeding at 6 weeks postpartum.  That is typically normal.

You should be fine to wait until after the weekend to contact your doctor since this could be your first cycle after giving birth.  If you run other symptoms, such as tenderness, swelling, pain, or fever, then you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.
