Answer
Danielle,

First of all, how long have you been trying?  About 90% of couples achieve pregnancy within 18 months when intercourse is well timed.

To maximize your chances of conception, make sure you have intercourse in the few days before ovulation, which usually occurs about 14 days before the start of your next cycle.

If you're not sure when you ovulate, then you can either use a home ovulation predictor test or chart your fertility signs.

More information on both of these can be found at fertilityfriend.com

The "goo" you're referring to was probably a mixture of semen and cervical mucus.  Cervical mucus is a normal discharge that increases to an eggwhite consistency close to ovulation and is a sign that you're fertile.
