Childbirth/brown discharge after delivering a stillborn birht of twins

Question
I had a still born delivery on 9/1/09. Since then I have been having a  brown discharge. I have since had a period two times already. When my menses goes off then the brown discharge starts back. When I wipe, there is hardly anything there, but on my pantyliner there is the brown discharge. I have been tested for infections and pregnancy and all tests are negative. Is it possible that I have some old placenta still left inside of me?

Answer
Hi Tina,

I am so so sorry about the loss of your babies.

Brown discharge sounds like old blood - there appears to be some kind of bleeding going on. I would suggest following up with your doctor or midwife.  Ask for an ultrasound to determine the cause of the bleeding - don't let them dismiss your concerns.  Continuing to have bleeding 2 1/2 months after a birth is not normal.

Because you are continuing to lose blood, you may want to continue to take your prenatal vitamin, and possibly extra iron.

Anything past the above recommendations is out of my area of expertise; if you have further questions on this, I would suggest contacting one of our OB/gynecology experts:

I wish you the best -  this has not been an easy year for you.
