Question
my dr told me i have a small pelvis and so should be preapred for a hard delivery - i want to go natural and this is my first baby.  what exactly is the pelvis and why does having a narrow one affect giving birth.

thank you.

Answer
Hi Abi,

The pelvis is the bones of your hips and pelvic area that the baby has to pass through.

It is more the dimension on the inside of the pelvis as well as size and position of the baby that determines how well the baby can fit through more than the outside dimensions. Also your body produces relaxin, which helps your pelvis to have some flexibility. I've seen many women who were told they had small pelvises have very normal labors with no problems at all.

To insure your best chance at having the best birth you can - Avoid induction (having labor started by your doctor) if possible to ensure your body has the optimal amount of relaxin to help your pelvis be able to move. During labor, try to stay active and stay out of bed. The positions that feel the best during labor are generally the positions that will help the baby to fit through the pelvis the best. During labor, try using many different positions: squat, walk, lunges, dance, relax in a tub or shower, the birth ball, hands and knees, etc.  During pushing, try to not be on your back - squatting and being upright will help maximize the amount of space in your pelvis.

I wish you the best with your upcoming birth!
