Question
If I've had 3 prior C-Sections using the "Bikini cut" and I had alot of scar tissue the doctor had to cut through last time, and I want to have a fourth baby, could I safely get a Verticle Incision this time instead of using the same Bikini Incision again?  Which would have less Risks?  Re-opening the same incision, or having a whole new incision site or a VBAC?

Answer
Erica,

No, a vertical incision is never recommended - it is used only in true emergency situations where general anesthesia must be used to get the baby out immediately.

Without more detail, it's impossible to say whether a new incision, re-opening the old, or a VBAC would be the safest.  It depends upon the time between births, the amount and location of scar tissue, the reasons for the c-sections, and if any other complications, such as uterine adhesions are present at the old incision site.

I would encourage you to ask your care provider these questions as only a detailed review of your records will allow for a reliable answer on the safest course in your particular situation.

Best,
Catherine
