Question
I am 25 weeks pregnant and was measured at only 21 weeks. I would like to know all of the reasons this may be. I know one reason is a low amount of fluid. what can be done that could add to the amount of fluid for the baby? I am very concerned with this issue. I want to know if it is a sign that something could be wrong? Thank You

Answer
There are many reasons that you might be measuring small.

One reason may be that your due date isn't accurate. Your care provider will probably do an ultrasound to make sure that your due date is correct.

With an ultrasound, they will also be checking to see how much amniotic fluid you have and also checking to see if your baby is growing at the rate they would expect to see.

If you are dehydrated at all, it can affect your amniotic fluid level.  Make sure that you are drinking plenty of fluids. There are many things that can cause low amniotic fluid levels; if it turns out that this is the reason you are measuring small, your doctor or midwife will look into those reasons to try to figure out why your fluid level is low.

If you are small of stature or you have strong abdominal muscles, that can also give you a smaller measurement.  Or your baby may just be small, but perfectly healthy.

You'll have more answers after the ultrasound.  If your doctor or midwife didn't order one yet, they may be waiting until your next appointment to see how the measurement is then, and if they are still concerned, they will do an ultrasound at that point.
