Childbirth/36 weeks and have alot of pain in cervix

Question
just wondering what that could be because i don't remember having it with my other two kids and I keep having these pains in my cervix/lower abdomen area like sharp pains but my water has not broke and im not more then a one that I'm aware of.

Answer
If the baby is punching or kicking in the cervical area, that can cause that stinging sharp pain in the cervix.  Sometimes it can be caused by stretching of ligaments, tendons, or muscles in that area.

It is very uncomfortable, and it is very common to experience it with some pregnancies and not others.  When it happens, you can try changing positions.  Keep track if it happens when you are doing certain things or in certain positions.  Make sure that you are staying hydrated as well.

Hopefully all this cervical poking will help your cervix to quickly dilate when you do go into labor!  However, experiencing the cervical pain does not mean you will go into labor earlier.

Mention the pain to your doctor or midwife at your next appointment; they may have other suggestions for things you can try to alleviate the pain.

Hang in there!

Experience

Since 2004, I have taught childbirth education classes focused on helping couples gain confidence, make decisions for their birth, and give them tools for helping them get the birth they want. Since 2004, I have also attended births in local hospitals as a birth doula (as of 8/10, I have attended 120 births) so I am able to see firsthand what is working in helping couples deal with labor. I am also a mom of five children, and have various birth experiences myself, including unmedicated birth and a cesarean.
