Question
I would like to vent a wood stove into a chimney being used by a oil burner. The pipe is 7" through the chimney. The wood stove uses a 6" pipe and the pipe coming out of the oil burner is also 6". It seen this means there is 36% more space for more smoke.When the wood stove is being used the oil burner will rarely run.I read some of the other answers and it sounds like this is not a good idea. Besides it being against code is the any other reasons it is not recommended?   My friend has a oil burner with a coal stove joined into 1 chimney and has no problems.

There needn't be any other reason than "being against code," In the event that both appliances were to operate at the same time, there would be a sizing deficiency to say the least, and dissimilar materials will deteriorate the flue lining as well. Still not a good idea. Your friends situation may better be described as "He's unaware of any problems." You are wise to investigate as you have and ask these questions prior to making the decision your friend made. Good luck.
