Question
The Heatalater unit is stuck closed with a small gap on the left side.  The handle won't move the unit open.  How much
trouble is it to fix and how.  The unit is probable 40 yrs old.  should it cost much to have it cleaned/repaired?  It has
been cleaned before.  Thank you, Bill

Using the links at the bottom of my home page, www.brooks-hearth.com, link to the Chimney Safety Institute of America web site. You will be able to use the locator and and get a list of all certified sweeps in your area. You can heat the rusted hinge pins and potentially open the damper, you can hit the plate with a heavy hammer, you can lubricate the hinge pins and let sit for a while... All of these solutions and others might work, or you could have an obstruction blocking the plate from opening? Contract with a certified sweep and invest in a qualified service and inspection.
