Chimney & Fireplaces/Installing a new wood stove

Question
QUESTION: Our house has 2 floors.  The last owners had a wood burning stove on the lower level.  They left and took the wood burner.  Can I get a new one and install it upstairs and use the existing chimney?  Can I tie into the existing structure, one floor above the original opening?

ANSWER: Hi David,

You could put a new woodburning stove on the lower level as long as the chimney meets the requirements of the stove.

You must have a separate flue for each appliance.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site examination of your system and to advise you.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

QUESTION: Can I not treat the opening downstairs as a cleanout and install the wood burner on the first floor?

Answer
Hi David,

That depends on the configuration of the chimney.  If it is a masonry chimney, properly sized and in good wroking order, it is possible.

You must have a separate flue for each appliance.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site examination of your system and to advise you.  Specifically, I recommend a Level 2 inspection on this system to determine its suitability for this use.
