Chimney & Fireplaces/Vent-Free gas logs

Question
I have some vent-free gas logs. I am getting ready to have a fireplace installed in my home. (no existing structure). What is the best type of firebox to use for this? Also if I choose to install a chimney so that it vents, is that a problem?

Answer
Hi Nancy,

Use a listed vent-free firebox for the vent-free gas logs.  If no particular firebox is listed, you can use a univeral-listed vent-free firebox.

If you use a woodburning firebox with a vertical chimney, the firebox must specifically be listed with vent-free gas logs and the vent-free gas logs must be specifically listed for used in a firebox with a chimney.  (Check the instructions with your log and/or consult the manufacturer.

NEVER use vent free gas logs in a factory-built fireplace with the damper closed unless the firebox is SPECIFICALLY listed for that use.  It will be indicated on the data plate on the fireplace and in the owner's manual.
