Question
Hi, I am installing a woodstove into a chimney dedicated to this stove only. It have a flue inside made of clay about 8" suare I would say. Once I put the thimble in, what is the best way to apply the cement for purposes of making sure it is 100% sealed right.
Also, My Dad has an older home with a woodstove and oil furnace on the same floor tied into one flue. What can I tell him as the reason as to why they made this illegal other than fires becoming more frequent. Was there a draft issue? Gasses? I need him to understand so I can get him to add a chimney. Thanks a million! Bruce
P.s. Can you look over this installation in the pics? 3x3 slate hearth on cement, 3 foot slate backing mounted on cement board mounted to the pine wall using 1 1/2 inch porcellain insulators. 6 inch double wall pipe coming through wall. Is the stove ok at 12" away from pine?
AnswerHello Bruce, lets start with the 1st question, sealing the thimble try using a quick drying cement (home depot, lowes) and use your hands and rubber gloves. 2nd questions your dad's chimney and why he should not mix liquid and solid in the same flue besides being against NFPA code, he could have a blockage and back up carbon monoxide and die or if he did burn the house his home owners insurance may not pay due to the "illegal" install. 3rd either follow the instructions for the stove for clearance to combustibles or your local building department.
hope this helped
