Question
i have a zero clearance wood fireplace chimney. it has a cover that is controlled by a lever inside the fireplace that is attached to a wire which goes up the chimney to a spring and the cover. the wire broke i would guess from the damper rubbing against it. how can i attach a new piece of wire to the existing wire and the lever? it broke at the damper and it can be reached.

Typically, you would not have this type of cap installed on a factory-built fireplace.
If the control bracket is mounted into a side refractory panel on a factory-built fireplace, I recommend this mechanism be removed.
A local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep can install a replacement cable for you.
