Chimney & Fireplaces/firebox

Question
Hi James,I've noticed that there are some vertical cracks in the firebox of my fireplace.I wasn't too concerned when they were small, but now they are about 1/4-1/2 inches wide.Is it safe to burn or do I need to replace the firebox?I'm sure it's the original one, about 36 years old.Thank you.

Answer
Hello Tony, do you have a "prefab" fire box? (metal chimney and firebox with masonry type floor and sides and back) if they are cracked you will need to replace them. if you have a masonry fire box then a mason can repoint the crack or rebuild it.
hope this helped
