Question
Hi, I just bought a house and the living room has a fireplace with an opening of 2 foot 6 inches high and three foot 6 inches wide.  I want to put a steel 1/4 inch plate on the front of the fireplace 3x4 in size with a 6 inch hole in the center to run a pipe into and up the chimney.  Any issues with this idea?  Also how would I attach the plate to the chimney it is made of brick, I want to remove this in the spring and summer season.  Also what material do you put between the steel and brick to seal off the gap?  Thanking you in advance    Doug

Hi Doug,

While hearth stove installations can use a block off plate as you're describing to prevent dilution air from entering the chimney, you need to have a full-length stainless steel lining system installed in this flue from the appliance to the top of the flue.

The flue diameter should match that of the stove (6").

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to provide you with a quote to do this type of work.
