Question
Our house was built in 74 and the pipe going out of the roof lacks about 2-3 ft. from going above the peek of the roof.  When the wind is in the wrong direction it brings smoke into the house.  My husband and I have not use the fireplace in many years but with the economy would like to start using it if possible.  Someone told us the pipe above the roof needs to be extended but my husband can not find pipe that size. It is like 13 inches around, the outer pipe size is.  Now what to do?

Hi Micki,

You must use the EXACT same piping that is currently installed.  You can't use any other type of piping.

Find out the manufacturer of the fireplace.  If they're still in business, you'll need to find someone that can sell you that particular piping.

Other solutions include a wind-directional downdraft chimney cap or the installation of an Exhausto chimney fan on top of the existing system.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem and to provide some specific solutions for you.
