Chimney & Fireplaces/flu extension for a temco fireplace

Question
I am having an addition built above my garage, so need to extend my chimney. The fireplace contractor told my builder that there are no flu extensions available anywhere for the Temco fireplace that I own since he says they went out of business. So he is charging me $5,000 to put a new flu in.  Does that sound right?

No it doesn't, your Temco fireplace and chimney were tested for safety and listed as a complete system. Any addition to that system must also be tested and listed for that system. This is to say, that if your contractor is planning to install a complete new fireplace and chimney system, the price may be accurate, if he only plans to replace the chimney and keep the fireplace, it voids the listing and may create a potential fire hazard and the price is always to high if your life and property are left in harms way.
