Chimney & Fireplaces/glass fireplace doors

Question
Hello Bart - I have remodeled the area around my 20 year old Superior gas
fireplace which has two glass doors which are not bi-fold doors.  The
fireplace was a brass finish and did not match my new decor so I
disassembled all the front trim pieces and doors and took them to be
powdercoated.  My problem is the doors.  The glass of the doors is supported
by a top and bottom frame and a frame on the outside edge where the door
posts are.  To remove the glass piece from each door I unscrewed several
screws of the top and bottom frame pieces and pulled the glass out toward
what would be the center.  Inside the top and bottom frame was a metal
support piece which was approximately the width of the glass.  On the
bottom of this metal support are holes through which the screws are
inserted.  I have one pair of metal supports for each door.  I was very rushed
when taking it apart because the demolition was going on around me, but out
came and screws and out came the glass and out came the supports and I
thought it would all go back together easily.  Wrong.  I cannot get it back
together no matter what I do.  If I put the metal supports together at the
bottom (and they do fit together as a pair) there is a slot for the glass to sit in
and when the screws are put in it is secure, except that the top of the frame
has no support and the glass is unsupported and falls out when it is held
upright.  If I put one support at the top and one at the bottom, the screws
don't reach to hold the glass securely and the whole thing comes apart.  It
appears to me that I need a set of supports top and bottom, but that is not
what came apart when I disassembled it-I have all the pieces.  I do not know
if the doors were jerry rigged to work before I took them apart and didn't
know it, or if I am just not clever enough to get them back together.  They
worked fine before I started this ordeal.  What do I need to do?????  Any help
will be appreciated.  I have searched on line to try to find the supports so that
I would have a pair top and bottom, but I can't find anywhere that sells just
the door parts, not the whole door.  Thank you - Lynne Charlat

Answer
Hi Lynne,

Unfortunately, no one in the industry sells just the door parts.  You must buy the entire door set, if it's even available on that 20 year old fireplace.

Sorry I couldn't be of any futher help.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
