Chimney & Fireplaces/hairline cracks in flue tile

Question

Flue cracks
We recently bought a 1970 split level house with a basement fireplace. After a
cleaning, the sweep said we had cracks in the flue tile and it needs replaced (cut
out with a spinner and replaced with metal liner and insulation) for $3500. I went
on the roof to confirm - there are cracks but I have no idea if they rise to the level
of danger. Been reading all the Q/A but still not sure when cracks are dangerous -
hairline, full crack, or with openings? (Of course, we face the expensive
repair/replace dilemma with most everything in a non-updated 38-yr-old house.)
Image attached. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Sam, from he picture you sent I do see several cracks and the 2 flues are miss alined...does it need to be removed and relined quite possibly (with out seeing it my self. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take an other first hand look at what you have. and at least get a second price. a Certified Sweep will be able to show you a picture ID form the Chimney Safety Institute of America
hope this helped
