Chimney & Fireplaces/heatilator box

Question
A home inspector noted that the heatilator box was corroding in the fireplace.  I can't seem to find anyone who knows much about this.  What is the heatilator box specifically for?  What other issues does this corrosion cause? Could you give an guesstimate as to how much it would cost to replace this.

Answer
Hi Kristin,

You should have a LEVEL 2 CHIMNEY INSPECTION completed when property is being sold or transferred.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do the inspection and to give you some specific on-site diagnosis of your situation.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Since a "heatilator-style" box is frequently a mis-used term, I can't really tell you what you have.

We can't give costs in this forum on replacement.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
