Chimney & Fireplaces/heatilator reline for woodstove installation
Expert: James Ball - 10/17/2008
QuestionQUESTION: I have a heatilator 'built in' fireplace in my modular home. I want to install a small woodstove. I don't trust the heatilator flue for the heat a woodstove will produce. I am thinking of wrapping stove pipe with an insulating blanket and running it up through the existing pipe. What do you think?
Thanks you in advance for your time. Matt
ANSWER: Hello Matt, if what you are describing this is called a "prefab" fireplace and in order to install a wood stove in that fireplace both the fireplace and wood stove must be rated for use with each other. Do not install the wood stove with out checking with both manufacturers.
sorry

QUESTION: Understood. Have you seen or heard of many people doing this? Do you know of many instances where a compatible woodstove was prescribed for installation using a prefab fireplace pipe? If not, should I just consider going through the roof with an approved kit?
Thanks again Mr. Ball,
Matt
AnswerHello Matt, start with your "prefab" fireplace and ask the manufacture if you can install an insert then with the insert manufacturer if the insert will go into a "pre fab" is they both say yes then go for it. other wise, yes buy a free standing wood stove and build a chimney out the wall or roof.
good luck
