Question
Hi there, James!
We recently purchased a 1940's home with a brick wood burning (massive!)unlined fireplace. I found after a while that the metal firebox was warped and completely rusted at the damper area. We also found leaks coming from the sides of the chimney. The chimney itself looks excellent, no cracks or loose brick or mortar in the outside, inside of the flue or crown. I'm planning to place a combination cap/damper at the top, and fix the flashing around the flue. My concern is in regards of the firebox. I would like to know either if I can get rid of it and use the brick hearth behind it or where can I found a replacement.
Thanks!

Answer
Hello Gabriel, I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have. It sounds like you might need some rebuilding of that unit and a relining of the chimney, all to make it safe to use. what does the heating flue (oil/gas) look like? have both checked.
