Chimney & Fireplaces/Ceiling leaking around fireplace

Question
the ceiling started leaking after a storm and we had a new roof put on, but it is still leaking. My husband got on the roof and put a little more tar around the chimney but it is still leaking.  It doesn't leak on every rain I guess just when the rain blows in.  I think the mortar is cracked.  Is there anything that we can do to seal the mortar or is this a hopeless case?

Answer
Hello Kathy, what did the roofer say? if the top of the chimney (crown) damaged? then water can get in there, was the flashing replaced? was it installed correctly?
do you have a cap on top of the chimney?
Tar is just a Band-Aid fix it right or you will be up there every other month.
