Chimney & Fireplaces/Exterior Chimney Box

Question
I have a Tru-Heat manufactured wood burning fireplace that was manufactured in 1986.  I have owned the home for 11 years now, and have used the fireplace each year, except for the last two.  I have had the chimney cleaned and inspected each year by a professional chimney sweep and each time they have found no problems.  I am planning to use the fireplace this year, and have some concern because the flue and chimney pipe are on the exterior of the home, surrounded by a masonite siding chimney box.  Some of the masonite siding on the chimney box is rotted and in need of replacement.  My question is this; if my chimney sweep cleans the fireplace as I plan to have him do, will the damaged siding around the chimney pipe pose any danger?

Answer
Hello Chad, the out side of that chimney is separate from the inside (except for clearance to combustibles and factory parts) I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have. you do not say if you sweep is certified. they will be able to make a 1st hand inspection.
