Question
lit fire for the first time this year we have a log burner we live in a semidetacted house neighbour came round and said there was smoke coming from his chimney upstairs but we had not got any smoke in our house

Answer
Hello Helen, sound like you have a shared chimney? if so then the  negative pressure of his house might be pulling air (and smoke when you use your fireplace down his chimney)They make a top mount damper that will close off the top of his chimney to stop that air from coming down (If he did have his damper closed)
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you both have.
hope this helped
