Chimney & Fireplaces/Fireplace spin draft controls

QuestionHi,
I recently had my chiment swept in a place I bought 1 year ago. It is a heatilator wood burning fire place with a damper and two spin draft control knobs. It also has a fan inside to blow heat out.
My main question is regarding the spin draft knobs. I have no idea how and when to use them, what direction to spin them in for whatever reason....basically I have no idea what they do or are used for. As for the fan/blower, I don't know if there is a way to make it more effective, but when I turn it on I don't feel all that much heat blowing out. Lastly, when I initially begin a fire, some of the time much of the smoke comes out from the fireplace and into the living room. It sets the alarms off and does so for a minute before the smoke finally goes up the chimney. And yes, I make sure the damper is open before I light the fire. I'm an amateur at this stuff so I appreciate all the help. Thanks.
AnswerHello Nicholas, 1st if you just bought the unit 1 year ago where it the manual? if you don't have it find it it will tell you every thing you need to know to operate it safely. 2nd, the smoke it sounds like negitive presure so crack a door or window before you lite the fire and it should work (experiment)
hope this helped
