Chimney & Fireplaces/creasote

Question
we have a wood furnace in our basement, when it rains we get a river of black stuff that smells like creosote running from the chimney across the basement floor.  My question is, is that creosote and is it harmful to our health?

Answer
Hello Rosamond, if you have a wood furnace then it will make Creosote and if it gets wet (from rain) it can flow like that and it is not great to have in the house. I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have.
