Question
we have a vintage preway fireplace that we want to install in our living room that has hardwood floors.  Can we set it on a piece of marble?  We have dimensions on the size it needs to be in case a spark flies out, however we have heard varying stories on the correct type of stone that needs to sit under it and the thickness of the stone.  We don't want brick because it is not formal enough.  Also, do you know if it is a problem to have a heating duct about 14 inches away in the wall.  Is that a problem?

Answer
Hello Lynn, when you say "vintage" I hope it is in good working order and you have the owners manual. as far as what to place it on and clearance to combustible all of that should be in the manual. you may need more than just marble on the floor, you could contact the local building department. As far as the vent is it a return? if so it will give you problems with smoking.
I would have a local Certified Chimney Sweep (www.csia.org, there you can look up by zip code to find one near you) take a first hand look at what you have.
