Question
I recently bought an old home (1908) and it has a precast insert into a masonry firebox. the only identifying marks on the insert are "THE MONARCH) it has no doors, only an adjustable grate for the bottom half. The back panel is cracked and appears to have been "half" repaired. my question is this due to the crack i believe there are countles open cracks and holes in the surrounding masonry (inside the box) What needs to be done to repair this and are there replacement panels for this insert. Also can i extend my travertine tile underneathe the insert for the ash pan pocket or does it need to be a specific deck.

Given the age of your new home, I would strongly recommend an NFPA-211, level II inspection be performed prior to investing in anything. As for the insert, I wouldn't hesitate to abandon it and concentrate on the fireplace. Good luck.
