Question
It is getting harder and harder to start the fire. The pilot light goes out quickly.
When we do get the fire working it turns off after about 40 minutes. Is this the
thermostat? Is this something I can fix myself? I had an estimate of $150.00 for
the first hour from a local repairman. This seems high. Any ideas welcomed.

If your repairman is knowledgeable about gas fired appliance trouble shooting, his fee sounds reasonable. There are many, too many possibilities to list as perspective culprits. These appliances do require service from time to time and its certainly not a task for the home owner. Good luck.
