Question
I have a home built in 1935. The chimney is in need of repair. It extends beyond the roof by over 10 feet, leaving a small section of chimney that is against the house, at about five feet.  The chimney is the center focal point of the front of the house. Whether I choose to simply tuckpoint or go with a complete rebuild, I am concerned with the astectics of the brick and mortar not matching. My question: Can the section of chimney that is against the house be ground out and tuckpointed (along with the upper section) or the outer layer of brick be knocked off and replaced, leaving the structure behind it in tact?

Hi Debbie,

I would recommend grinding and tuckpointing the chimney and rebuilding as required, but I haven't seen the job obviously.

You'll have to consult a local professional to give you specific options.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem and some potential solutions.
