Question
hello mr brooks. on the other side of a fireplace is a bedroom. a metal box is sticking out the back side of the fireplace into the bedroom and the client wants it boarded up. is there a special way to do this and what do i need such as insulation, wood, sealant, etc. i need to keep it safe.  please help me.
thank you much

Answer
Frank,

This sounds like a combustion air intake for the fireplace. I would recommend an NFPA-211, level II inspection before proceeding with any alterations to the system. You can find links that will assist you in finding an inspector for this job at the bottom of my home page at www.brooks-hearth.com. Good luck.
