Chimney & Fireplaces/Chimney

Question
"I recently had my roof replaced.  The day the mason was to point the bricks below the flashing, he was sick so the roofers flashed without the bricks being pointed beneath.  Actually, he did what was called "parging" spelling? that is just used cement cover the exposed spaces with out the detailing of pointing.  Now that I look back on my decision to make this cost effective, I regret not spending the extra money to point.  But the real issue here is that when he did the job he did not pull back the flashing as the roofers thought he should.  He has an excellent reputation and even checked the chimney from the attic to make sure everything was secure and he said he would be in his grave ( he's only 45) before it would leak.
It is the difference of opinion between the roofers and the mason that sticks in my mind.  I would not want to have the roof compromised in any way due to leakage.   I would be willing to have him do the job again, this time pointing and pulling away the flashing if I thought the roof was in danger.

Please advise."

Answer
Anne,

If you have a guarantee in writing concerning the future of the job, I wouldn't worry about it. Minus any water leaks related to the chimney flashing there is nothing to address. You will know in short order if the job is adequate when the rain starts to fall. Good luck.
