Chimney & Fireplaces/Can I convert a 2 sided Pre-fab gas fireplace to the door only?

Question
Hello -

This is a pre-fab metal fireplace. The front has a glass door and there is static glass on one side of the unit.

I would like to close up the side glass. Is there a way to do this? Are there sheet metal liners available?

If I can legally and safely do this with a liner - or with something else, I'm planing to build a stud wall on the opposite side.

If a liner is available then I'll be adhering fire brick. Is there a special thinset for this or ?

Thank you.

Answer
Travis,

You asked;

Hi Randy - Thank you for your quick responce, just a few more questions on the subject. The flue of the unit is incased in a drywall chase. The left side of the unit butts up to drywall and the right side static glass panel is exposed. What would be the best steps to remove the unit? Will I have to remove the entire drywall chase to expose the fireplace to flue connection or normally is this within reach from the interior of the unit? Their is drywall on the left side? How is the base of the units attached to the floor which is currently sitting 6" inches above the finish flooring on a raised platform? I took some photos of the unit but I don't know how to attach them to this responce. If there is away to do so let me know and I'll post them so that it's easier to understand. Last question - Isn't there supposed to be a tag or plack identifying the manufactuer and model number of the unit? Isn't it supposed to be clearly visable - if so where would it normally be located? Thank you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

You can find the listing label on the fireplace that identifies the manufacture and model number of the fireplace. Armed with this information you can “Google” search for the manufactures installation instructions. This will expose at least how an installer should have installed the unit. I would assume that the unit is held in place by a nailing flange on either side of the unit and that a sizable opening will be required for removal. Hope this helps.
