Chimney & Fireplaces/Leaking chimney

Question
I have recently recently removed a fireplace unit.Pipe and all.We made it into a recessed entertainment center.The reason for removing it was because of a leak and it had rotted the flooring under it.
We tried to seal all that we thought could leak.I now believe that water is getting in,only when it rains really hard or sideways,through the spark defuser/chinmey cap.Is there some way to seal that off completely?

If you have removed the fireplace system, pipe and all, I suspect that the termination cap removed as well. Make certain that the hole in the chase cover is sealed and you may have a roofer look at the flashing as well. Fact is, there are numerous points of entry that may be considered and even an inspection may be the answer to find the problem.
