Question
Is it necessary to have tile installed in front of a gas operated fireplace that doesn't use logs?  Someone in my building told me I had to have this and it wasn't to code without.  I thought this was only necessary with a real wood burning fireplace.

In as much as the gas fireplace will not produce sparks, there is no danger, however, the fire still produces heat and a safety zone or hearth extension is required. If your fireplace is a factory built system, refer to the installation instructions for the required size and thickness, if its masonry, and the opening is less than six square feet, you will require a four inch thick non combustible surface that projects eight inches to the sides and 16" inches to the front. If your opening is six square feet or larger, same thickness but 12" inches to the sides and 20" inches to the front. Best of luck to you.
