Chimney & Fireplaces/Wood Burning Fireplace

Question
We have a wood burning fireplace (20 years old I think) in our apartment that
works well but has a face plate and facade that is very old (lots of dust and ash
trapped in area above and below fire box).  Is it possible to change the face plate  
(and damper) alone ? How involved is it and how do I look for appropriate
alternative. Many thanks
