Question
Randy,
I am building a gambrel barn style cabin and plan on heating it with a wood-burning stove. The walls are ten feet high and the ceiling is vaulted.  Being a gambrel there are two roof pitches.  Does the chimney have to extend above only the first pitch or does it have to extend above the highest point of the entire structure which would be above the top of the second pitch (peak of the building).

If the stack is within ten feet of the center peak of the roof, it must be at least two feet higher that the peak. If it's more than ten feet from from the peak of the roof,measure down two feet from the top of the termination point of the stack and at that level, you must be able to measure ten feet horizontally without coming in contact with anything, including the roof. Check the installation instruction manual of the venting system you purchase and this may be explained better than mine. Good luck.
