Chimney & Fireplaces/Do I need a liner?

Question
Hi:

I am having a pellet stove inserted into my existing fireplace. I had the chimney inspected; it has clay tile lining in good condition. My question is, do I need an additional liner or is my clay liner okay? The installer will charge $400, which I'll pay if I need to, but I don't want to put in something that is unnecessary. One website said the clay tiles are perfectly fine if they are in good shape, which mine are. Thanks.

I would check with the manufacture of the pellet stove. The manufactures installation instructions will dictate the answer. I would go with the liner sized for the pellet stove rather than the existing fireplace flue liner as the size of the liner will determine the efficiency of the appliance. When your chimney was inspected, It should have been an NFPA-211 level II inspection and a determination of structural integrity was reached concerning the existing liner. Any competent inspector, understanding you proposed installation would have advised the new liner regardless of the condition of the old one. Best of luck to you.
