Question
I have a single-sided wood-burning fp (exterior wall) that I would like to convert to a 2-sided gas fp. The house was built in 1938, and is 100% masonry. Is this possible?

Answer
Hi Jeane,

It's typically not possible due to the flue size.  It will be too small when you are finished.  It has to be able to vent just like a woodburning fireplace and currently it can only vent the size of opening that exists on one side.

Structural problems will also arise with this type of installation.

Finally, you'll be opening up a huge hole to the exterior that will be a massive problem with heating and cooling.

You don't want to even try this.
