Question
I have a fireplace which has a chimney and was built to burn wood. I no longer burn wood, so a  gas log feature was added to it. When I am not using the gas log feature, can I close the damper completely? I used to keep it open, but cold air, rain, and a bird came down the chimney.

Hi Joan,

Typically, the instructions for the gas logs will tell you to leave the damper open at all times.  There is supposed to be a clamp installed to prohobit the closing of the damper valve plate.

If you have a pilot, you must leave the damper open at all times.

You should install a chimney cap on your flue to keep the birds and rain out of your chimney.

If you have glass doors installed, simply close them when not using the gas logs.  IF you have glass doors installed, NEVER burn the gas logs with the doors closed.

We recommend that the damper plate be fully open at all times to prevent CO poisoning.
