Chimney & Fireplaces/Inner Hearth

Question
Our fireplace is original to our 1950's home.  We have recently redone the mantel and instead of using it as a normal fireplace this winter, we purchased a woodburning stove insert.  We would like to redo the tile that is on the hearth and inner hearth (firebox floor).  Currently it is a six inch orange-red clay tile I believe, very similar to what is used on a McDonald's floor.  It was constructed over a cement base.  What material would we be able to use considering the fire will now be burning inside the stove and not directly inside the firebox?
Thanks so much in advance if you can help with our dilemma.

Answer
Hi Paula,

You still need a non-combustible material in those areas.  Ceramic tile, brick, thin brick, slate, etc will work.

Don't forget that your woodburning insert should have a full-length stainless steel chimney lining system installed from the unit to the top of the existing flue.  The lining system should also be insulated.

If you have any questions on your particulat installation I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep.  They are also you best choice to do your annual maintenance on this unit and system.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
