Chimney & Fireplaces/Wood/coal new exhaust

Question
I have a second flue, as part of an exterior masonry chimney.  The flue stops at the first floor, where an old wood stove is (living room).  I want to install a wood/coal boiler and keep my existing oil furnace online, which exists via flue 1 (which DOES go all the way below ground and into the basement.) I also want to tap into flue 2 for the new boiler, taking the small wood stove offline.  BUT- is there a way to extend flu 2 into the basement?  It would mean digging down, going through the foundation, and also disrupting the existing chimney below where flue 2 stops.

Is that doable and safe?  Too expensive?

Is it OK to run an insulated class A metal chimney along the outside of the house in a very cold climate, IF I cant extend flue 2 into the basement?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Don,

You can only have one appliance per flue.

Each flue must have a lining system.

Extending flue 2 into the basement will be extremely expensive and possible not even doable.

In a very cold climate, I would not recommend an all-exterior chimney.

I don't think you'll be able to power vent the new wood/coal boiler so that's out.

Your best bet is to consult a local contractor on this work.  They'll be intimately familiar with the local codes in your area which will determine much of what you can do.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
